Theatre Dramaturgy at Kent is available as postgraduate MA programme as well as MDrama undergraduate Masters for Kent Single Honours on the unique Drama and Theatre Studies course at Kent which takes students over four undergraduate years up to Masters level, graduating with the MDrama.

Theatre Dramaturgy at Kent is created as a pre-professional Masters course which teaches academic skills within a (pre-)professional environment. Student Dramaturgs work closely  with students from our other Masters specialisms (in particular Producers and Directors) and, in Spring of each year, contribute to a three week theatre and performance festival that is collaboratively created by all Masters students across the specialisms and presents their work in public performances in venues both on campus and at Canterbury but also elsewhere in the region throughout East Kent and the Medway. We also work closely with visiting lecturers, guests, and two partners, Paines Plough and the Gate.

The year starts off with a shared module with the students from Creative Producing, and you will learn about contracts and law, company structures, employment and IP, venue programming, publicity, marketing, budgeting and not the least the developing and evaluating of productions. Your collaboration culminates in a joint virtual project submission, based on actual scenarios: You could be asked to programme a season for a certain venue, create a festival event, or develop a touring show or a community project.

Simultaneously from early on, you will also meet and work with the Directing students, and you adopt the role of Production Dramaturg as they work towards their Autumn term showcase études.

At the same time, we will accompany the entire Autumn season at London's Gate Theatre, including regular visits to their production and workshops with directors and artists. With Paines Plough, you will work in the area of New Writing and may even have the chance to meet an actual playwright as they are about the write a play.

Following from these projects, you will embark, from February, on your individual work projects. Apart from your contribution to the Spring Festival in a dramaturgic capacity (whether in production development or publicity or another role is left to your decision), you will have the chance to arrange a work placement, or to shadow or research the work of a venue or company,. and to reflect on this experience in another piece of writing. During this time of the year, you will need to arrange your own individual tutorial meetings. and to make sure you stay in touch and get supervision.

While MDrama students do only 120 credits and graduate in July, postgraduate MA students embark on a Masters Dissertation which they will complete over the summer.

If you want to do this Masters course, you should be eager to see theatre of all sorts at different venues anywhere you go, you should have knowledge of a wide range of repertoire (playtexts and other material), and you should be up-to-date with the regional, national and international world of theatre performance.

Entry Requirements (for MA):
a 1 or 2.1 honours degree in theatre studies, or a related disciplines such as dance, music, literature and languages, film, cultural studies, history, philosophy, or art and design, or equivalent professional experience in the field.
