European Theatre and Dramaturgy at Kent is available as postgraduate MA programme as well as MDrama undergraduate Masters for Kent Single Honours on the unique Drama and Theatre Studies course at Kent which takes students over four undergraduate years up to Masters level, graduating with the MDrama.

European Theatre Dramaturgy at Kent is created as a pre-professional Masters course which teaches academic skills within a (pre-)professional environment.

Autumn Term

The Autumn Term involves two compulsory modules:

DR893 Theatre Research: Theories, Methodologies, and Practices (15 credits) - taken by all 4th year and MA students at the University of Kent and designed to give students insights into working methodologies and contacts with members from the arts industry.

DR890 European Theatre: Landscapes and Dramaturgies (45 credits)   -  a theoretical module taught by weekly seminars and workshops designed to give students a more rigorous academic training and engagement with contemporary thinking in the field of Dramaturgy and European Theatre.

Spring Term

The Spring Term involves another academic compulsory module:

DR894 Thinking Theatre: Theories and Aesthetics of Performance (30 credits)

PLUS a choice of one of the following:

DR862 Production Dramaturgy (30 credits) - a module which enables the student to get a hands-on experience of working as a production dramaturg on a fourth year student production to be shown as part of Masterworks -- a showcase of final year works.

DR837 Dramaturgy: Professional Placement (30 credits) -- arranged by consultation with a tutor, the professional placement of two to four weeks may be undertaken by the student in a relevant arts institution in the UK or in a European country. This experience is then framed as empirical research and used as a basis for a subsequent essay.

Or optional 'wild' faculty module (30 credits) - this can be drawn from a list of modules offered by the School of Arts and the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Kent.

Summer Term

While MDrama students do only 120 credits and graduate in July, postgraduate MA students embark on a Masters Dissertation which they will complete over the summer.

If you want to do this Masters course, you should be eager to see theatre of all sorts at different venues anywhere you go, you should have knowledge of a wide range of repertoire (playtexts and other material), and you should be up-to-date with the regional, national and international world of theatre performance.

Entry Requirements (for MA):
a 1 or 2.1 honours degree in theatre studies, or a related disciplines such as dance, music, literature and languages, film, cultural studies, history, philosophy, or art and design, or equivalent professional experience in the field.
